Welcome back to Morpeth Jetsan! It has been some time since our last post - I’d like to pin the blame on a bit of con flu following the Rendr Festival in Belfast early this month. It put our entire team out of action for a week or two but we’re back on schedule!
This time round I’d like to go into a little bit of detail on how exactly our upcoming title Fight Back The Night plays - the core gameplay loop, progression, and so on, just to make sure you all have an idea of what the game is actually like!
Gameplay primarily revolves around these objects called Beacons - metal instruments with a direct connection to your character’s God - Syr. By igniting these artefacts with your various abilities and protecting them until they are fully lit, Syr will assist you in progressing throughout the game - opening doors, breaking down barricades, and so on.
But it’s not quite as simple as lighting a beacon and waiting long enough! Each time a beacon in an area is lit, an encounter will begin - you will be locked to that area and monsters will start to emerge from the dark, intent on snuffing out the flames! The main enemy of this types are what we call Moths - who will target the nearest source of light - either you or the beacons. Once close enough to their target, they have a tendency to lunge towards them at extreme speeds.
You’ll have to carefully manage your attacks - especially early on, as your flames will recharge slowly over time. Each level has a series of encounters like this, each with a varying number of beacons and enemy types - after completing such an encounter, you will be directed to an overworld map, where you can navigate to other levels.
You might notice above two symbols with numbers in the corners - these are trackers for the two main currencies of the game - Dark XP and Light XP. Dark XP is sometimes dropped by enemies, whereas Light XP is gained by completing encounters. These can be spent on different upgrades, depending on which Shop type you go to! At the Deacon's (A member of your religious order) Shop, you can buy upgrades for your fire abilities, a larger pool of fire, faster recharge, and upgrades specific to the type of fire ability.

On the other hand, you can visit Nexus - a Moth that has the ability to speak the common tongue, who is willing to provide you enhancements if you return to him the remains of his fallen comrades (The Dark XP they drop!). This allows you to increase health, or get abilities based on the enemies you’ve encountered so far - such as a Dash that mimics the Moths ability to temporarily increase your speed.

The Overworld itself is split into several worlds - and at the end of each world (Or sometimes in the middle!) you’ll face a Boss enemy - a more powerful, named version of a basic enemy type. But more on those at another time!
So that’s the gameplay in a nutshell! There are some other aspects you’ll discover as you play, such as larger beacons that can only be ignited once the smaller beacons around it have been lit - and lots of upgrades you can unlock as you play - either through story progression or purchasing them from shops! We’ll have an article covering some of the early abilities later on, as well as articles about some of the enemies and NPCs you’ll encounter.
That’s all I have this week! Thanks for taking the time to read, and hopefully reading a bit about the gameplay will have you more excited to play! Don’t forget to wishlist Fight Back The Night on Steam!
Bye for now,
Jason
